PETROTERMINAL DE PANAMÁ, S.A. CONTRIBUTES TO IMPROVING THE INFRASTRUCTURE OF TWO SCHOOLS IN CHIRIQUÍ, BENEFITING MORE THAN 1,500 STUDENTS

Access to basic services such as drinking water is an essential element to improve the learning and health of school students. According to IDB studies, it is estimated that 1.9 billion days of attendance could be gained worldwide by preventing children’s illnesses. In addition, improving a school’s infrastructure can change the learning environment by making it safer, more inclusive and encouraging pedagogical practices that foster collaboration and teamwork.

Under this approach, Petroterminal recently carried out two transformations: one in the Camarón Arriba Educational Center, Besiko (located in the Ngobe Buglé region), where a rainwater purification system was installed; and the second in the Caldera Basic School, where students now have an electrical distribution panel that guarantees their safety. Both projects total more than B/.18,000, benefiting almost 1,500 students, teachers and their families.

At the Caldera Elementary School, Petroterminal corrected and installed new equipment so that the school’s electrical system works optimally and safely for the benefit of more than 235 students, 15 teachers and 120 parents who are part of the community of this educational center. These improvements contribute to the comfort of teachers and students, and this will be reflected in improved learning. This contribution amounts to B/.4,636.20.

Meanwhile, 1,300 students, in addition to the teachers of C.E. Camarón Arriba, have a rainwater purification system. This system seeks to provide greater health and well-being to the school community. According to studies, unhealthy water and lack of sanitation are responsible for 88% of diarrheal diseases. In addition, maintenance supplies and paint were delivered for the upkeep of a classroom. This contribution amounts to B/.13,500.43.

“In Petroterminal we are aware that improvements in public education are a joint and strategic work of all stakeholders. Therefore, from our Education and Culture pillar we have been working with our sustainability team to identify the risks and opportunities of neighboring schools in order to achieve a real impact on the lives of the most vulnerable populations.” Cinthia Espinoza, Human Resources Supervisor, commented.
